Can Hemp Oil Benefit You?

Everywhere you go, there are signs, magazine articles, website posts, and friends and family members boosting about hemp oil benefits. As if that’s not enough, the products are seemingly everywhere, from health food shops and grocery stores to the counter at your local gas station. You may be curious about these natural oils, but need more information before making a purchase, that’s okay, there’s much to learn about the popular plant extract.

Hemp Oil from Flowers or Seeds

There’s a misconception that all hemp oils are the same. Both hemp oil from flowers and seeds have benefits, and only one product contains cannabidiol, the popular compound found in the plant’s leaves, stems, and flowers. Also known as CBD, cannabidiol is one of more than 100 known phytocannabinoids in hemp. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the other well-known compound found in both the hemp and cannabis plants, CBD doesn’t exhibit psychoactive properties and is legal throughout the U.S. CBD products in the country can’t contain over 0.3% of THC.

What are Hemp Oil Benefits?

Scientists are still researching the positive and negative characteristics of hemp oil, but there is enough data available for CBD extracts that it is legal in the U.S., Canada, and several countries around the world.

A pharmaceutical grade, full-spectrum CBD oil, Epidiolex, is approved by the FDA to treat two rare forms of epilepsy or severe seizure conditions in children ages two and older.

Ways to Use Hemp Oil

There are several methods for taking CBD oil that vary by onset and duration. The most common and one of the oldest ways include sublingual CBD tinctures. These are made with carrier oils, such as olive, sunflower, and coconut oil, and they absorb under the tongue into the bloodstream. When taken correctly, CBD tinctures work in about 15 to 20 minutes, and each dose lasts between four and six hours.

You can also use CBD oil in drinks and foods. However, this method does take longer to take effect because they must go through the digestion process and break down in the liver to work. When using oils in this manner, the onset is 30 to 90 minutes. Another option is CBD capsules, which are pills filed with oil.

A popular way to take hemp oil is infused in candies. These are available in 10, 15, and 25 mg doses.

How Much Oil Should I Take?

Always read the label for specific instructions. Medical professionals with CBD experience suggest that consumers that are new to the oil should “start low and go slow.” Begin with 10 mg per day and slowly increase to a level that works best for you. Don’t worry if you take too much, the only side effects are mild and include drowsiness, stomach upset, and irritability.

Hemp oil has the potential to help many consumers get a better night’s rest, which can improve mood, lower stress, and, overall, reduce anxiety. If you have more questions about hemp oil benefits, speak with your physician or a hemp product specialist.
